The Baxter County Library is inviting the community to explore Arkansas history and the nation’s founding this month with a traveling exhibit and a week of family programs tied to America 250, the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The exhibit “Arkansas / Arkansaw: A State and Its Reputation,” curated by historian Brooks Blevins, is on display now through April 2. The exhibit examines how Arkansans have been portrayed over the years, from rugged pioneers to subjects of the “hillbilly” stereotype, and invites visitors to consider how those images developed and how they continue to shape perceptions of the state. Admission is free and no registration is required.
On Saturday, March 14, the library will host “America 250 U.S. History Treats and Trivia: The Early Years” from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Participants of all ages are invited to form teams and test their knowledge of American history from colonial times through 1776, with prizes for top teams. Registration is required and closes March 13 at noon. Teams of more than five should email [email protected]. Others can register at BaxLib.org/Events.
The library’s “Spring Break Staycation: Snap, Crackle and Pop!” runs March 23-27 with a different themed activity and movie each day, all free and requiring no registration. Monday’s session runs noon to 6 p.m. and features “Liberty’s Kids” with red, white and blue snacks. Tuesday, also noon to 6 p.m., focuses on American pony bead bracelet crafts alongside classic Donald Duck shorts. Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. features a medal of honor cookie decorating activity and a screening of “Sergeant York.” Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. is dedicated to the Founding Fathers, with confetti poppers, a screening of “Hamilton” and themed snacks during intermission. Friday wraps up the week with a day-long treasure hunt, a screening of “National Treasure” from 1 to 3 p.m. and a Treasure Hunt Snack Station from 3 to 4 p.m.
