The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund has named Zachary A. Brown of Baxter County its Student of the Month for July 2026. Brown is a single father working toward a degree while holding down a full-time job.
He studies special education and business at Arkansas State University-Mountain Home. He also works for Goodyear and raises his 9-year-old son. “Some days it feels like a lot, but I keep going,” he said.
Brown said he went back to school to build a steadier future for himself and his son. He felt stuck before enrolling, working hard without moving forward. School, he decided, was the path to something more stable.
His choice of major grew out of his own life as a parent. “I chose special education because of my own experiences as a parent,” he said. “I want to work with kids who need patience and understanding.”
Brown said the return to school has made him more confident, and his son can feel the change. He finds joy in small moments, like his son’s smile at school pickup and playing together at the lake.
He credited the scholarship fund’s donors for helping him keep going. “Your support has given me stability, confidence, and the ability to keep moving forward,” he said.
The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund is a statewide nonprofit that works to end single-parent poverty through higher education. Since 1990, it has awarded more than $50 million in scholarships across the state.
