Dr. Esosa Ukponmwan has joined the Baxter Health Nephrology Clinic and will begin seeing patients in early September.
Ukponmwan joins Dr. Grant Mathews and nurse practitioners Joyce Stratmoen and Meagan Thitoff at the clinic, which treats kidney patients from north central Arkansas and southern Missouri.
He completed his nephrology fellowship at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center, where he treated patients with both sudden and long-term kidney problems and managed patients on dialysis. He also worked with transplant teams at the University of California San Francisco, caring for patients before and after kidney transplant surgery.
Ukponmwan has worked with patients on hemodialysis, in which a machine filters the blood, and on peritoneal dialysis, in which the filtering happens through the lining of the abdomen at home.
Before his fellowship, he completed an internal medicine residency at Michigan State University, where he also taught medical students as a clinical faculty member. He holds a master’s degree in public health with a focus on epidemiology and has worked as a clinical researcher studying how kidney disease, heart disease and diabetes interact.
He has volunteered at free clinics in Michigan, provided care to people living with HIV in Houston and took part in relief efforts after Hurricane Harvey.
“His clinical training, his research background, and his years of service to underserved patients all point to a physician who genuinely cares about people,” said Ron Peterson, president and CEO of Baxter Health. “Our kidney patients and their families are going to be in very good hands.”
