Sarah Dewey, a registered nurse in the Baxter Health emergency department, has been presented a DAISY Award after she came in on her own time to care for a patient who had no one else to help him.
The DAISY Award is a national program that honors nurses who go above and beyond for their patients. FNBC sponsors the awards at Baxter Health.
According to the nomination, Dewey was caring for a young man with a complex wound that needed specialized care every day. He lived more than an hour from the hospital and turned down home health services because he was not comfortable with someone coming to his house.
Dewey did not leave it there. She explained why daily wound care mattered and asked whether family or friends could help him, and he told her he had no one.
“If you will come back to the ED, I promise I will be the nurse to take care of you,” Dewey told him, according to the nomination.
She offered to come in on her day off, and the patient agreed. Dewey set up the follow-up visits and treated the wound herself, and the nomination said it healed remarkably well.
The nomination noted that Dewey did all of it while working full time in the emergency department. She is also studying to become a nurse practitioner, teaches as a clinical educator for a local nursing school, serves as her team’s Pediatric Champion and takes part in disaster drill training.
She is also a wife and the mother of a young daughter.
“She is the kind of nurse we all strive to be,” the nomination said.
