Buffalo National River Partners is recruiting volunteers to serve as “information rangers” in Boxley Valley every Saturday and Sunday in October, the valley’s busiest stretch of the year.
Volunteers will be stationed at four spots along the upper river: Lost Valley, the Ponca low-water bridge, the elk lookout on Arkansas Highway 43 and the Boxley Mill. Shifts run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a brief orientation at 9:30 a.m. at the elk pullout on Highway 43 to pick up supplies.
Park rangers would prefer two people at each location, such as a friend or family member working together, but a single volunteer can cover a site.
No expertise is required. Each volunteer gets a folder with area facts and answers to the questions visitors ask most, plus a volunteer vest and a walkie-talkie. Assigned dates and location details are sent out before each scheduled weekend.
The group is asking anyone who signs up to list all the dates they are available and note any familiarity they have with a particular location. Sign-ups are at bnrpartners.org/sign-ups, or by email at [email protected].
Buffalo National River Partners is the nonprofit friends group that supports the park.
