The Mountain Home Area Chamber of Commerce has announced a location change for Friday’s Christmas in Whoville celebration.
The festival, originally scheduled for the Baker District, will now take place in the parking lot of Farmers & Merchants Bank across from the downtown square.
The Dec. 5 celebration will still feature the Christmas parade, vendor booths, and the annual tree lighting ceremony. This marks the seventh year for the First Security Bank Tree Lighting at Veterans Plaza, which has become a centerpiece of the community’s holiday kickoff.
The Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade begins at 6 p.m., starting at Hospital Drive and traveling down South Main Street toward the square. Floats will be judged on theme interpretation, craftsmanship and creativity near the Courthouse stage.
Last year’s parade, themed “‘Twas The Night Before Christmas,” saw NEXT powered by NAEC claim first place after finishing as runner-up the previous year. Home Instead Senior Care took second, while Baxter Healthcare Corporation/Vantive finished third.
Last year’s tree lighting ceremony drew crowds for Christmas music, a reading of the birth of Christ from the Gospel of Luke, and the countdown to light the tree.
First Security Bank entered a five-year sponsorship agreement with the city earlier this year to maintain the 25-year-old Veterans Plaza, which honors local veterans. The deal included $15,000 for repairs to the aging memorial wall, where mortar had cracked and stones bearing veterans’ names had come loose.
