The City of Mountain Home has announced that applications for disaster relief funds are now available for residents affected by the May 26th tornado. Those seeking assistance can obtain the Baxter County Disaster Relief Program Application from the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas.
Applications can be picked up in person or requested via email from the Food Bank. Once completed, forms should be returned to the same location. The deadline for submitting applications is August 9th.
This announcement comes on the heels of a highly successful fundraiser that raised over $70,000 for tornado victims, as reported by Mountain Home Mayor Hillrey Adams on Monday.
The fundraiser, held last Friday, included a smoked chicken lunch and a pork steak dinner with an auction. The community showed overwhelming support, with all 1,000 chicken lunches sold out and approximately 400 pork steak dinners sold before the evening auction.
Mayor Adams praised the widespread community effort that made the event a success, highlighting contributions from businesses as far as Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and Melbourne, Arkansas.
The May 26 tornado, classified as an EF3 with wind speeds up to 147 mph, caused significant damage in Briarcliff and Salesville. Baxter County OEM Director David Stults previously reported that 47 properties in the county suffered major damage, with 21 completely destroyed. The tornado resulted in one confirmed fatality and knocked out power for 52,000 residents.
As the community continues to recover from this devastating event, the distribution of these funds marks a significant step forward in the rebuilding process. Eligible applicants must be Baxter County residents directly impacted by the tornado.
The Observer will continue to provide updates on the application process and fund distribution as more information becomes available.
