The Leading Edge Aviation Foundation of Baxter County is accepting applications through Dec. 15 for scholarships up to $2,500 for high school students to attend aviation STEM summer camps in 2026.
The Aviation-Aerospace Career Challenge is open to students in grades 9 through 11 who submit essays exploring aviation and aerospace career paths. Winners will receive funding to cover enrollment fees and travel expenses to aviation summer learning programs of their choice.
“From your current position as a high school student, grade 9-11, you are already in position to focus your future study and learning plan towards a career that will provide an interesting and rewarding life,” the foundation stated in its application materials.
This marks the fourth year the foundation has offered the scholarships. Students who have participated in previous years have attended programs at the National Flight Academy in Pensacola, Florida; the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs; Space Camp and Aviation Challenge in Huntsville, Alabama; and the Sullenberger Aviation Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Applicants must submit essays of 300 to 750 words describing their chosen aviation or aerospace career category, analyzing required skills and personal qualities, and explaining which career activity they find most appealing. Essays must be typed, double-spaced and submitted as PDF or Microsoft Word files.
The foundation outlined nine career categories for students to explore, including flying and flight operations, engineering and design, maintenance and technical services, manufacturing and production, airport and airline management, airspace and flight systems technology, space exploration, education and training, and policy and regulation.
Essays will be evaluated on depth of research, personal insight, clarity and organization, and enthusiasm for STEM and aviation learning. Scholarship awards will be announced in January to allow winners time to secure reservations for summer programs.
Students can submit entries to the Leading Edge Aviation Foundation at [email protected]. For questions, students can contact aviation STEM teacher Mr. Meurer or call Gerald Gaige at 870-656-6005.
The foundation emphasized that students may choose from previously attended programs or propose their own aviation STEM summer learning experience for approval.
