The Baxter County Historical and Genealogical Society is asking the community to help close a $15,000 gap in the restoration of the historic Casey House.
Funding from Baxter County and the state of Arkansas covered most of Phase I of the project. It fell short of what is needed to finish the back porch and support columns. The society started its “All A-Board” campaign to raise the rest.
Supporters can sponsor a board for $150. The back porch needs 100 white oak planks to complete, which adds up to the full $15,000.
Built in 1858 by Col. Randolph D. Casey, the Casey House is the oldest standing structure in Mountain Home. The two-room dog-trot cabin once served as Baxter County’s first courthouse and first post office. It has survived the Civil War and a near-devastating tornado in 1985.
The society said restoring a building this old calls for specialized craftsmanship and period-accurate materials. Donations help ensure authentic materials are used and that the structure stands for future students, visitors and residents.
Donors become a permanent part of the story of one of the county’s oldest buildings. The society will recognize supporters in its quarterly magazine, on Facebook and on its website.
Checks can be mailed to the Baxter County Historical Society, P.O. Box 2125, Mountain Home, AR 72654. They can also be dropped off at the museum at 300 Bomber Blvd. on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
