The Baxter County Historical & Genealogical Society will host a presentation on the nearly extinct town of Buffalo City at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the Knox Room of the Baxter County Library.
Jason Harmon will explore the 200-year Arkansas heritage of the historical community located on the White River in Baxter County, addressing the common question: “Where is Buffalo City?”
The presentation will cover Buffalo City’s earliest settlement and the nearly forgotten salt trade that originated in Batesville and beyond. Harmon will discuss the town’s deep connections to communities up and down the White River, including Batesville, Old Carrollton in Carroll County, Jacksonport, Des Arc, Norfork and many other Arkansas towns.
“Confusion about the nearly extinct town is understandable, and one reason Jason Harmon is determined to help answer the question by delving into the community’s 200-year Arkansas heritage,” according to the Historical Society’s announcement.
Harmon will also highlight the indispensable role that the Baxter County Historical Society and its local history collection play in Arkansas historical research.
The presentation is free and open to the public. Guests are welcome to attend.
