We are better than this. Mountain Home is a better community of responsible people than to allow a “state takeover” of our school district. We are a caring group of residents who have for many years built a very pleasant place to live, educate our children and provide opportunity for all to prosper in an atmosphere of healthy growth. We are better than to allow a smaller group of “NO activists” to control our destiny and hand over management of our school district to state bureaucrats. Sadly, that is just what we have been doing.
The School Board does indeed have “serious decisions to make in the coming months” and rational and reasonable citizens need now to step forward and fortify their work to provide school facilities that will produce the kind of qualified graduates who may choose (a) to gain more training and serve our needs here in business and professions, or (b) to go on to advanced education for careers of national import if desired. Actions of the “NO activists” can in the short term limit tax revenue to our critical services, but that results in deteriorating infrastructure, undesirable operating conditions and long-term damage that costs far more to repair when it must be in the future. Those limits are short-sighted rewards that are, in fact, huge penalties later. The rest of Mountain Home must work to support our School Board’s solution to ensure quality facilities for our students and the premium staff of educators that support them. The state takeover will not do that.
Any solution that is paid for by eliminating student extracurricular and after-school programs is a sorry result that does not represent the quality and character of who we are. I have worked with the administration and educators we have, and they are amazingly good. They run programs that provide students entry to rewarding careers – or to earn scholarships for much higher education. To deny our community the assets of well prepared graduates is to lower future opportunities and quality of life. WE are better than that!
