A touring troupe that paints large canvases on stage while a band plays behind them will perform in Mountain Home next month.
Artrageous is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at the Ed Coulter Performing Arts Center inside the Vada Sheid Community Development Center on the Arkansas State University-Mountain Home campus. The show is presented by the Haley Cultural Arts Endowment. Tickets are available online or by calling the box office at 870-508-6280.
The show combines live painting with original music, dance and audience participation. Artists work on stage throughout the performance, finishing pieces in minutes and building toward a gallery of completed paintings by the end of the night.
The troupe traces its roots to street performance in the 1980s and has been touring under the Artrageous name since 2014. It performs roughly 100 shows a year and has appeared at Carnegie Hall, an NBA All-Star halftime show and the 1998 World Cup final in Paris.
Organizers say the Mountain Home performance will include several audience events. Attendees can enter a costume contest by arriving in homemade Artrageous-themed outfits, and the first 100 people through the doors will receive what the troupe calls an Adventure Kit. Audience members can also join the performers on stage during the show and enter to win one of the paintings created that night.
The performing arts series at ASUMH has brought touring shows to the Twin Lakes Area since 2011. Programming is selected by the ASUMH Performing Arts Council, a group of community volunteers chaired by Caroline Carroll.
