On March 7, both Mountain Home Junior High and Mountain Home High School will host informational events for students entering grades 8-12 and their families.
At the Junior High, the “Launching Your Future” event will be held on campus (2301 Rodeo Dr.) from 6 to 7 p.m. During this event, students currently in grades 7 and 8 and their families will learn about course offerings, clubs, student organizations, pathways, graduation requirements and various other topics.
Junior High principal Kyle McCarn said this event is always impactful for students and their parents. “As students begin to have more autonomy with age, some parents feel like they are less informed about what goes on in their child’s school,” he said. “Our staff is working hard to ensure that our parents know how things work on our campus and what opportunities we offer for their kids.”
At the high school, students currently in grades 9-11 will have the opportunity to attend a course fair from 4-7 p.m. High school teachers will be stationed in and around the school’s cafeteria (500 Bomber Blvd.) to visit with students and answer questions about course offerings. If students and their families visit with at least 5 teachers during the event and document those interactions, they will be entered to win a family athletic pass (for students in grades 9 or 10) or prom tickets (for students in grade 11). The French Club Chili Supper will also take place that evening. Tickets for a to-go bowl of chili will be $5 each.
High school principal Mary Beth Russell said she hopes this event helps ease the minds of both students and parents as they plan for their futures. “The high school is a large campus with so much to offer,” she said. “We have incredible teachers, and this event is a great opportunity for them to meet with and connect to the families we serve. I think this event will help everyone – students, parents, and staff – feel more comfortable during our registration process later this spring.”
Both buildings have Family and Community Engagement (FACE) teams that identified the need for events like this to keep parents and families informed. Dr. Dana Brown, the district’s Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services, said connecting with families and the community is an important component of the work the district does. “Our FACE committees at each building have identified really unique and engaging ways to work with families and community members, and these events are a great example of their work.”
