Eric Butler is the No. 1 GED scorer in Arkansas, and he reached the honor by following a path his mother walked first.
Butler is a student at the Arkansas State University-Mountain Home (ASUMH) Adult Education Center. He was recognized for the state’s top score on the steps of the Arkansas state Capitol.
His mother, Amanda Butler, stood on those same steps nearly two decades ago. She was named a GED Top 25 honoree in 2006. Today the two hold the same award.
The center pointed to the family’s story as an example of what adult education can do across generations. A mother led the way, and a son followed her example to the top of the state.
The ASUMH Adult Education Center offers free GED classes in Mountain Home and Yellville. The program serves Baxter and Marion counties. Classes are taught by a certified teacher, with on-site testing and instruction shaped to each student.
Students can enroll at any time. The official GED exam costs $16 in Arkansas, and free vouchers are available for the practice tests. Online and evening classes are also offered.
The Mountain Home center is in McClain Hall, Room 200, at 1600 S. College St., and can be reached at 870-508-6304. The Yellville center is at 125 East Highway 62 and can be reached at 870-508-6303.
