A three-hour songwriting workshop led by musician and writer Matt Powell will be held at the Donald W. Reynolds Library Serving Baxter County.
The workshop covers form, rhyme, meter, melody and harmony, and lyric writing. It includes written materials, a lecture and demonstration, and hands-on feedback, along with in-person critiques.
Organizers say writers at any level can attend, and all styles and skill levels are welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring something they have written, an idea to work on, an instrument, or simply their curiosity.
Powell has written or co-written songs for more than 30 years. He was a founding member of Dago Red Revival, The Incredible Heavies and Mable Jo & the Jealous Hearts, whose single “Supernatural Man” was featured in the CW drama “Supernatural.” He spent much of his twenties managing the Ernest Tubb Record Shop on Lower Broadway in downtown Nashville.
He holds a bachelor of music from the Berklee College of Music in Boston and a law degree from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, where he was research editor of the International and Comparative Law Review. From 2012 to 2017 he was music editor at Humor in America, a blog affiliated with the University of Texas at Austin’s English department.
His writing on music, film, literature and culture has appeared in Variety, No Depression, Emmys.com and StyleBlueprint, among other publications.
Powell also teaches at Arkansas State University Mountain Home, where the third edition of his six-week songwriting workshop begins this month.
Registration is required and space is limited. Those who register and cannot attend are asked to cancel early so someone on the waitlist can take the spot, and waitlisted registrants should watch for an email the day of the event.
