Move over fast food restaurants, there is a new sheriff in town when it comes to grabbing a quick meal, and they’re a whole lot leaner and greener.
Mountain Home’s Angela and Mark Lockman are looking to help residents ditch the French fries and burgers, and bulging waste lines, by bringing quick and healthy alternatives through their popular restaurant Tasty Greens Togo.
The restaurant, which is located at 300 E. 9th St in Mountain Home, features a whole variety of freshly made wraps, tacos and salad bowls with vegetables sourced from local farms like Age Old Agriculture, while also offering drive-thru and weekly meal prep options for people on the go.
“Everybody is busy now, everyone’s in a hurry,” said Mark Lockman.” Everybody wants to get in, get out, and a lot of people really enjoy that. We really try to make things as fast as possible.”
Tasty Greens Togo got its start during the COVID-19 pandemic, after Angela approached her husband about leaving her job at the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas to open a small food shed with a focus on making healthy food for people in town.
As avid meal preppers, both Angela and Mark put a heavy emphasis on going to the gym and eating clean in an effort to live a better life.
“We eat pretty clean, we go to the gym, and we started meal prepping,” Angela Lockman said. “We’ve meal prepped for ourselves for a long time, and we started doing it for friends and family. I would go deliver it to them on the weekends, and then it got to the point where we had to get an extra refrigerator at our home to deliver them. And I really think people would eat healthier and eat better if it was convenient. It’s not convenient for people to dice up their vegetables and make things. So, I thought why don’t we make healthy fast food?”
After agreeing to Angela’s plan, Mark began building a food shed in their yard over a four-month period, before moving it to its permanent location in the TJ Maxx parking lot alongside other popular food sheds like Mountain Home Burger Company and Ozark Mountain BBQ.
Tasty Greens Togo would open with a menu of nine items and would quickly grow in popularity as 2020 went on. By 2021, Angela and Mark would begin looking for a bigger location to handle the influx of customers coming into their drive-thru.
Mark would also leave his job at Baxter Labs to work alongside Angela full-time.
“We finally got to the point to where he could quit his job,” Angela said. “The drive-thru was booming with COVID. Everybody was driving through because of no contact. And at the little shop over there, we had very little refrigeration. We had three small refrigerators and that’s all we had to store everything. We had a big menu, and we would just run out every day. So, we were like, let’s try to search for something bigger.”
With a need for a bigger space, Angela and Mark began looking around Mountain Home for a bigger location, ultimately landing in the building next to Bamboo Garden on East 9th Street.
The new location offered Tasty Greens Togo a space to add outdoor and indoor dining alongside its drive-thru service. It also gave the Lockmans the opportunity to hire more staff and a chance to get to know their customers better.
The Lockmans would move into the new location in Jan. of this year. Their former food shed would go on to become Kona Grill.
“I like this spot better because we can actually see people,” Angela said. “Before we were just a drive-thru, we never really got to know our customers. Now we have some many regulars that come in to see us.”
Tasty Greens Togo offers a variety of wraps, sandwiches, burgers, salads, protein bowls, tacos and pasta dishes.
For salads, Tasty Greens has broccoli salad, grilled veggie salad, taco salad, berry salad, apple walnut salad, sweet potato salad and a sunflower crunch salad.
“Sweet potatoes and broccoli are about as simple as you can get,” Mark said. “If you don’t really like vegetables, most people do like broccoli or sweet potatoes. Not everybody likes salad, so we try to cater to those people. “
On the wrap side of the house, Tasty Greens Togo offers a sugar-free BBQ chicken wrap, a spicy Thai wrap, a Southwest chicken wrap and a strawberry spinach wrap. A vegan black bean wrap is also available for those looking to skip meat.
Tasty Greens also has a sugar-free BBQ sandwich and spicy black bean burger.
For protein bowls, the healthy restaurant offers up several options including a cauliflower taco bowl, a vegan Quinoa bowl and a simple bowl with BBQ chicken, sweet potatoes and broccoli. For those looking to celebrate Taco Tuesday, Tasty Greens also has you covered with their classic low-carb tacos.
The menu is rounded out with protein pasta dishes filled with meat turkey meatballs and chicken. Zucchini pasta and shrimp dishes are also available. Each pasta dish comes with a homemade sauce.
Healthy pizzas finish out the menu as Tasty Greens’ latest offering. The Lockman’s also roll out weekly specials featuring a variety of new dishes.
“It’s all a single-serving portion,” Angela said. “It’s a healthy portion, and that’s what we try to stick to. Things that are nutritionally balanced and single servings. Versus, you go out to a restaurant and you’re getting a portion that’s so big.”
In addition to its regular menu, Tasty Greens Togo also has a grab-and-go cooler for people on the run. The cooler is located in the back of their dining area and features pre-made wraps and salad bowls. The cooler is also home to Tasty Greens Togo’s deserts.
A punch card program is available for returning customers to allow them to work up to getting a meal for free after purchasing 10 meals. The restaurant also takes large meal prep orders for people to take home. Meal prep orders can be picked up inside or through the drive-thru.
“Meal prep is based off of our menu,” Angela said. “Everything will be separated, it’s in compostable boxes so it can last. If you have a salad in there it will last because it will wick away the moisture. Everything that needs to be heated will be in a steamable pouch. Sauces will be on the side. They just go to the website and order the meal they want. They can customize it however they want.”
While running a restaurant is a big commitment, both Angela and Mark said the venture has brought happiness and a sense of freedom to their everyday lives. The couple said they hope to continue to expand their business in the future.
“We have flexibility of time. I don’t have to worry about someone telling me I can’t go do something when we want to go do it,” Mark said.
Tasty Greens Togo is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, please visit Tasty Greens Togo on their Facebook page. To order Tasty Greens Togo online for meal prepping or drive-thru, please visit here.
