Three Mountain Home Bargain Box volunteers have received Baxter Health’s Heroes with Halos award after helping a man who fell in the store’s parking lot.
Diane Steele, Donna Judson and Betty Gaither were honored following a nomination from a community member. Volunteer Services Director Becky Rose, Bargain Box Coordinator Karla Tyler and fellow Bargain Box volunteers presented the awards.
The fall happened Aug. 3 in the back lot of the Bargain Box Thrift Store. A woman had parked behind the store because the main lot was full, and her husband stayed in the car while she shopped.
He dropped his cell phone and it rolled under the seat. When he tried to get out for a better look, his foot caught and he fell onto the hot blacktop.
His wife returned to find him on the ground. She could not lift him and he could not get up on his own, so she called 911.
Volunteers came out of the store with ice and a cold, wet towel and stayed with the couple until firefighters arrived and helped him back into the car. The man sprained his left ankle and scraped an elbow. Rose called the couple two days later to check on them.
“We wanted to honor the heroes who helped and stayed with us until the Fire Department arrived,” the woman wrote in her nomination. “We sincerely appreciate these ladies!”
