Twin Lakes Playhouse will hold auditions next month for “A Sherlock Carol,” a holiday whodunit that pairs Sherlock Holmes with the world of “A Christmas Carol,” directed by Anne Johnson.
Tryouts are set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, and 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23. No acting experience is needed, and roles are open to ages 14 and up.
The theater is casting a wide range of parts, from Holmes and Ebenezer Scrooge to Timothy Cratchit, supporting characters and carolers. Audition materials will be released later, and the Playhouse is asking interested performers to watch its page for details.
The play sends a grown-up Tiny Tim to the famous detective’s door, asking Holmes to investigate the suspicious death of his old benefactor, Scrooge. What follows is a Christmas Eve mystery that blends the characters and cadence of Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens.
Written and originally directed by Mark Shanahan, “A Sherlock Carol” premiered off-Broadway in November 2021 and has since become a seasonal favorite at theaters across the country. The script folds in familiar faces and lines from both stories, set several years after Scrooge’s famous change of heart.
Johnson is a familiar name at the Playhouse. She directed its 2025 production of the Southern comedy “Farce of Habit,” guiding the cast through nearly 10 weeks of rehearsal, and has since appeared on stage there in the farce “Play On!”
Twin Lakes Playhouse is an all-volunteer community theater that has staged live productions in Mountain Home since 1971. It draws new and returning performers for each show and relies on volunteers on stage and behind the scenes.
