Twin Lakes Playhouse will hold auditions next weekend for its production of “Murder on the Orient Express,” the Agatha Christie murder mystery. Tryouts are set for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 13, and 6 p.m. Sunday, June 14. The theater is casting actors of all ages and experience levels.
The Playhouse also needs volunteers to work behind the scenes. Help is wanted with sets, props, costumes, lights, sound and stage crew. Organizers say there is a place for people who have never worked on a show before.
The play is based on Christie’s 1934 novel, one of the most famous mysteries ever written. The story takes place aboard the luxury Orient Express as it crosses Europe and is stopped by a snowdrift. A wealthy American passenger is found stabbed to death in his locked compartment, and the killer is still on the train.
At the center of the case is Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective Christie featured in dozens of stories. Poirot happens to be aboard and is asked to find the killer among the passengers. He is known for his careful, methodical reasoning.
The best-known stage version is a 2017 adaptation by playwright Ken Ludwig. Christie’s estate commissioned the script, which was the first play featuring Poirot to reach the stage in more than 75 years. Ludwig trimmed the novel’s large cast and added humor while keeping the detective at the center.
Twin Lakes Playhouse has staged community theater in Mountain Home since 1971. The all-volunteer group depends on members who act, direct and handle everything from costumes to lighting.
