Local woodcarving enthusiasts are putting finishing touches on their wood spirits this week as the North Arkansas Woodcarvers approach the final session of their spring beginner’s course.
The 10-week program, which meets Thursday mornings at VFW Ozark Post 3246, is in its ninth week under the instruction of Paul Baumann. Participants have progressed from basic techniques to carving intricate wood spirits, a popular project depicting faces in wood.
The club offers its beginner woodcarving course twice yearly, with sessions running in both spring and fall. Classes meet weekly on Thursdays from 8 to 11 a.m. at the VFW post in Mountain Home.
“We’d love to meet you and get you signed up for our next class or just have you check out the club,” organizers said in announcing the upcoming fall session.
The North Arkansas Woodcarvers welcome visitors any Thursday morning during class hours to observe the craft and learn about enrollment opportunities. The fall session dates have not been announced.
Woodcarving has seen renewed interest nationwide as people seek hands-on hobbies and traditional crafts. The three-hour weekly sessions provide instruction in tool use, safety procedures and various carving techniques.
Those interested in joining the fall session or learning more about the club can visit the VFW Ozark Post 3246 any Thursday between 8 and 11 a.m. No prior woodcarving experience is required for the beginner’s course.
